We are the Student Government of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and our mission is to help improve the lives and enhance the experiences of the students. We strive to faithfully and truthfully serve and represent students as they pursue their futures. We exist to represent student interests to a wide variety of audiences, including the UCCS Administration, the Board of Regents of the University of Colorado, the City of Colorado Springs, and the Colorado Legislature. We represent the students of UCCS as the “official voice of the students.”

SGA works to investigate and resolve common student concerns, advocate for the inclusion of students in the overall policy and decision-making process of the university, promote awareness of the students’ decision-making roll in the academic community, enhance the quality and scope of education both inside and outside the classroom, and empower students with leadership and management opportunities.

SGA creates, implements, and oversees a $300,000 budget that is generated by the Student Activity Fee. This budget supports SGA, student organizations, and clubs on campus. This includes the Scribe, Riverrun, UCCS Radio, and many of the student clubs.

The Student Government Association is led and overseen by three branches of governance: executive, legislative, and judicial. The individuals who fulfill the positions within these branches come from every corner of campus. They are charged with establishing SGA’s official position on a variety of issues as well as advocating for and carrying out its objectives. SGA members sit on the University oversight committees, thereby giving valuable feedback to the University Administration.

As an SGA member, your role is very important. You are the voice of the student body, representing student interests to university staff, faculty and leadership. SGA members are involved on campus, develop valuable leadership skills, learn to be competent communicators and to be members of a team, gain insight into organizational structures and funding, and gain a basic understanding of political processes and parliamentary procedure. Most importantly, being a member of SGA can be fun and rewarding.

Members of SGA need to be fully committed and understand that effective student governments require time and resources.

Responsibilities of all SGA Members:

  • Attend all SGA meetings.
    • Almost all SGA meeting occur on Thursdays from 7:30-11:00PM
  • Sit on one University Committee and one SGA Committee
  • Hold at least two office/outreach hours per week on behalf of SGA

How to Join SGA

There are two ways to join SGA:

  • Be appointed to a position by SGA
  • Be elected in the spring elections

Appointment Process

To start the appointment process, an interested current UCCS student will need fill out an application for a position on Mountain Lion Connect. The chair of the Appointment Advisory Committee will then contact the applicant to set up an interview. The Appointment Advisory Committee will then interview the applicant, and determine if the applicant is a good fit for SGA. If the Appointment Advisory Committee determines that the applicant is a good fit for SGA, the Appointment Advisory Committee will make a recommendation to the SGA Senate. The Senate will then vote to appoint the applicant at the next Senate meeting. If voted in, the applicant is then an official member of SGA.

Elections

Elections happen every spring semester. Candidates for election declare their candidacy for a SGA position next school year in late January or early February, and the elections are held mid-march. The election process includes a debate, and plastering election posters all over campus.

In order to run in the elections the first step is to fill out a canidate packet. You can fill out the packet here on MLC.

If you have questions about club funding, contact the Diretor of Finance at sgabac@uccs.edu
Check the calendar for BAC and Senate meeting dates. Remember, both the BAC and the Senate must meet before you can expend funds!

What does my club need to do to be eligible for funding?

Your club must be a registered with Student Life and Leadership. See Student Life and Leadership to learn more.

What does the club funding process look like?

The funding process has 4 steps:
  1. Submission of funding proposal. (Fill it out at here)
  2. The Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) meets and will approve, edit, or deny your funding request. A representative from your club is required to attend the BAC meeting
  3. The SGA Senate then meets and either approves or sends your funding request back to the BAC. A representative from your club is not required to attend the Senate meeting, but it is strongly suggested. If no one from the club can attend the Senate meeting, the club can leave a statement with the Director of Finance.
  4. No later than 30 days after the event the club fills out an event review form on Mountain Lion Connect. (https://orgsync.com/69883/forms/81876 ) Clubs that do not complete the event review form will not receive any more funding for the remainder of the school year.
